$15,000 was donated to Meals on Wheels of Lancaster as part of the Elan Charitable Giving program in partnership with Penlanco Federal Credit Union. In addition to the donation, Elan and Penlanco employees took over volunteer duties for a day earlier this spring where they also surprised the organization with an additional $5,000 donation.
As part of the in-person volunteering event, Elan and Penlanco employees worked with Meals on Wheels staff and other long-term volunteers to prepare, pack, and deliver meals to more than 200 people in need.
“As a child I was very much food insecure. If I came home and there was bread and mayonnaise available to me, I was really thrilled. My meals were what I was getting at school or when I went to my grandparents’ house, so I know, first-hand, the impact food assistance can have. Meals on Wheels provides a great service to our community and will use this donation to continue to change people’s lives," said Stacey Remick, CEO, Penlanco Federal Credit Union.
Meals on Wheels of Lancaster provides nutritious, freshly prepared meals, 5 days a week, at a reasonable cost to those who cannot provide meals for themselves. They rely heavily on volunteers in their community to ensure the food security of approximately 1,000 individuals every year.
“We couldn't do what we do without volunteers. They're the lifeline of the organization. If you look at the volunteer hours and we had to convert that into full time employees, it would be 20 full time employees that we'd have to hire, just to cover the hours of volunteers, so it’s very important that once a volunteer comes in here, they become part of this family,” shared Doug Hopwood, Volunteer and Program Development Director, Meals on Wheels of Lancaster.
